  • AWB stands for Air Waybill which is a non-negotiable transport document that serves as a receipt of goods by the carrier and a contract of carriage between the shipper and carrier. The Master Air Waybill or the MAWB is a non-negotiable transport document issued by the carrier on receipt of good from the freight forwarder. Similarly, the HAWB stands for House Airway Bill which is primarily a document issued by the freight forwarder on receipt of goods from the shipper.
  • Air Freight is the carriage of goods by air as the mode of transport.
  • Letter of Credit is a preferred method of payment in the freight forwarding industry. A Letter of Credit or L/C is a written undertaking from a bank on behalf of a buyer to pay the shipper/seller a said amount in certain currency given that the seller submits the required documents within the given time frame.

  • Break Bulk is the act of unpacking a portion or the whole of a consolidated shipment for reconsignment or delivery .
  • ICDs are also known as dry ports and are facilities that provide temporary storage of containerized cargo, provide all the port-related services and allow the benefits of containerization to be realized on the inland transport leg of international cargo movements.
  • CFS refers to Container Freight Station and is a facility primarily used for the purpose of assessment, consolidation and de-consolidation of the containerized cargo. They are appointed as custodians of goods by the Commissioner of Customs, under Section 45 of the Customs Act, 1962.
  • BoE stands for Bill of Entry and is a document filed by the importer or customs broker with the Customs Department mainly to complete necessary import clearance formalities to free the goods from the Customs after assessment.
  • At times when the carrier doesn’t have an access to the last port of destination, the cargo is first directed to an intermediate port and thereafter taken to the final port. This is known as transshipment.

    The Tran shipment Bill of Lading is a BoL issued by the vessel owner or his agent who undertake the transshipment of the goods from an intermediate port to the final port.
  • When a Freight Forwarder as a carrier issues a receipt of goods after receiving it from the shipper for the movement of the goods by sea it is called the House Bill of Lading.
  • A Master Bill of Lading is a receipt of goods issued by a carrier after receiving the goods from the freight forwarder. In a Master Bill of Lading, there can be more than one consignment. Once the cargo reaches the destination, the associate office of a freight forwarder delivers cargo to the final consignee.
  • A Bill of Lading is a negotiable transport document issued by a carrier that acts as the receipt of cargo for shipment. It also serves as the contract of carriage and as a document of title to goods.
  • Sea Freight is primarily the transport of goods through the Sea or Ocean. The goods are essentially consolidated in containers and transported from one port of discharge to the port of destination. A Bill of Lading is used as the transport document for the movement of goods by the sea.
  • FIATA primarily stands for Federation Internationale Des Associates de Transitaries et Assimiles and in English translates to International Federation of Freight Forwarders Association.
